Researches on Building Environment

One element that plays a big role in my animation would definitely be the sea. So I did some researches on how oceans are animated by Studio Ghibli (as suggested during feedback session). I think there are generally two ways that oceans could be shown in animations. One is to focus on the waves and the other on reflections. For animations that focuses on waves, the ocean is usually more active (?) and acts like a warning to the audiences/ characters that something's going to happen. As for the other, the ocean is calmer and has a peaceful atmosphere.

Another innovative way that waves were portraited in Ponyo was by characterizing them into fish-like creatures. And I think, by this way, it makes the scene more entertaining for the audiences but at the same time shapes the ocean into the villain which I think would be contradicting to the main theme of my animation if I am to adopt this technique.

Ruairi Fallon is a printmaker who works mostly with woodcuts. I found it interesting how he has been able to capture the smoothness of water with materials as hard as wood. Another famous woodblock printing would be The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai, which captured the scene of a large rogue wave threatening three boats off the coast. Both artists mentioned have portraited just the opposite sides of how oceans act. Though the atmosphere between these artworks might look contrasting, I think both artists had portraited the sea using blocks of colours with different saturations, and, at some point, used lines to emphasize the movement of each wave.

This is a tourist attraction located in Dubai, Deep Dive Dubai, one of the deepest pool over the world. The pool is decorated to create an underwater city for divers to explore. It inspired me a lot in picturing details of how the sunken buildings would look like in my animation.

Another reference would be Jal Mahal. I particularly chose it because, unlike the references I have provided on top, only parts of the Jal Mahal palace is sank into the lake. (4 levels hidden) Though not much pictures of the levels underwater could be found online, I think this could still be a good reference for me to combine what I have found prior to this and build up my environment.
